After every successful payment, Stortech automatically sends the customer a payment receipt. The receipt mirrors the lines from the settled invoice. Some lines can raise questions from your customers; this article explains how to read them. Two things to remember up front: the receipt total is always exact and identical to the invoice, and the full line-by-line detail stays available on the linked invoice (link and PDF accessible from both the receipt and the customer portal).
The "Billing adjustment" line
When a customer changes something mid-cycle (unit change, rate adjustment, adding or removing a protection plan), billing calculates two amounts: a credit for the time already paid but unused, and a charge for the remaining time at the new rate. Shown as-is, these two amounts look like noise (for example "−$84.73" followed by "+$105.06").
To avoid confusion, the receipt combines these amounts into a single net line called "Billing adjustment" (in this example, "+$20.33"). If the net is under one cent, the line doesn't appear. The amount shown is the exact net; the detail (credit + charge) stays visible on the linked invoice.
Prorated first payment (first-of-month billing)
For rentals billed on the 1st of the month, the first payment doesn't cover a full month: it covers only the period from sign-up to the following 1st, calculated prorated. To keep the receipt clear, it shows the actual period covered (not a full month), the real monthly rate marked "prorated" (for example "10x10 — $240.00 / month, prorated", so it isn't mistaken for the monthly rate), and an explanatory note: "This first payment is prorated through [date]. Your next payments will be billed on the 1st of each month."
Subsequent payments are at the full monthly rate and charged on the 1st of each month.
The automatic receipt link expires after 30 days
The link included in the automatic receipt email expires after 30 days: it's a Stripe security measure, not a Stortech setting. After that, the emailed link no longer works.
The invoice and receipt stay accessible at any time elsewhere: every invoice has a Download PDF and Copy link button in your dashboard, and that link doesn't expire. Your tenants also find their invoices and receipts in their customer portal, with no time limit.
Good to know
The receipt is sent automatically after every successful payment; you don't need to trigger anything. The receipt's language follows the contact record's Language field (French by default). The formatting never changes the total or the amounts charged; only the displayed lines are grouped for clarity.
Common questions from customers
"What is the Billing adjustment line?" The net amount of a mid-cycle change (the credit for unused time, minus the charge for remaining time). The receipt total stays exact.
"Why is my first payment smaller than a full month?" The rental is billed on the 1st of the month: the first payment only covers up to the following 1st, prorated. Subsequent payments are at the full rate.
"The receipt and invoice don't have the same number of lines. Is that an error?" No. The receipt groups adjustment lines to stay readable; the linked invoice keeps the full detail. The total is identical.
