Understanding Unit Types vs Individual Units
The Two-Level System
Stortech uses a simple two-level system for managing your storage units:
Unit Types (Templates)
Think of these as categories or blueprints. Examples:
"Small (5x5)"
"Medium (10x10)"
"Large (10x20)"
"Climate Controlled Medium"
Each unit type defines:
Size and dimensions
Monthly pricing
Security deposit amount
Features and descriptions
Individual Units (Actual Rentals)
These are the specific units customers rent. Examples:
Unit A101
Unit B205
Unit C-12
Each individual unit:
Belongs to one unit type
Has a unique identifier
Has its own access code
Can be rented to one customer
How They Work Together
First: Create a unit type (e.g., "Medium 10x10" at $150/month)
Then: Add individual units to that type (Units 201, 202, 203, etc.)
Result: All those units share the same pricing and features
Benefits of This System
Easy Management
Change pricing once at the unit type level
Automatically applies to all units of that type
No need to update each unit individually
Consistent Customer Experience
Customers see clear categories when booking
Pricing is consistent for similar units
Professional presentation on your storefront
Flexible Inventory
Add new units anytime
Temporarily remove units for maintenance
Track occupancy by unit type
Planning Your Unit Structure
Before creating unit types, consider:
Naming Strategy
Good Examples:
"Small 5x5 - Closet Size"
"Medium 10x10 - Bedroom Size"
"Large 10x20 - Garage Size"
Include Key Features:
"10x10 Climate Controlled"
"10x20 Drive-Up Access"
"5x10 Upper Floor"
Pricing Considerations
Research competitor pricing
Consider unit features (climate control adds value)
Account for location within facility
Plan for promotional pricing
Unit Numbering
Plan a logical system for individual units:
By Building: A101, A102, B101, B102
By Floor: 1001 (first floor), 2001 (second floor)
Sequential: 001, 002, 003
Common Questions
Q: How many unit types should I create? A: Most facilities have 5-10 unit types. Create one for each distinct size/feature combination.Q: Can I have different prices for same-sized units? A: Yes, create separate unit types (e.g., "10x10 Standard" and "10x10 Premium").Q: What if I have unique one-off units? A: Create a unit type even for single units - it maintains system consistency.
