Facility map

The visual map of your facility: unit status at a glance, plan editing, and wayfinding for tenants.

Written by Etienne Champagne

The map is the visual representation of your facility: each unit appears as a rectangle on the floor plan, with a color indicating its status (available, occupied, incoming, leaving, past due, locked, maintenance). It serves two purposes: a View mode for a daily glance, and an Editor mode to place or reposition units on the plan, as well as the wayfinding elements that guide your tenants to their unit.

Who this article is for

Viewing the map (View mode) is available to all roles. Editing the plan (Editor mode) requires the Owner or Manager role.

Before using the map

The facility needs at least one unit type and units created. See the Units article.

View mode

Step 1.
Open the Map section from the main menu. The page loads in View mode by default.

Step 2.
The plan shows all placed units on the active floor: each unit is a rectangle with its number, color indicates status (see the legend at the bottom of the plan: available, occupied, incoming, leaving, past due, locked, maintenance), and aisles and non-rentable zones are shown.

Navigation tools

Zoom in and Zoom out adjust the level of detail.

Fit to screen recenters the plan.

Floor selector (Floor 1, Floor 2, etc.) switches between floors for multi-floor facilities.

Search a unit... locates a unit by number: non-matching units fade out and the found unit stays highlighted on the plan.

Clicking a unit

Clicking a unit opens a summary popover with its number, status, type, size, surface, and monthly price; if it's occupied or booked, the tenant's name shows too. Shortcuts (View unit, View rental or Create a booking depending on the case) open the full detail, which isn't available directly on the plan.

Editor mode

Step 1.
Click the Edit tab at the top of the page. The plan becomes editable.

Step 2.
Move a unit by drag-and-drop, rotate it with the control that appears on hover, add a new unit to the plan by dropping it from the list of unplaced units, or remove it from the plan (the unit still exists in Stortech; only its visual position is cleared).

Step 3.
For multiple floors, switch between floors and add more as needed.

Step 4.
Changes save automatically or via a Save button, depending on configuration.

Wayfinding elements

In Editor mode, Stortech lets you place infrastructure elements (entrance, gate, stairs, elevator, restroom, access keypad, loading area, lockers, office) and draw the corridors connecting them, to build the route shown to your tenants. The map can also surface wayfinding warnings (for example, a corridor crossing through a unit, or a unit far from any corridor) to help you fix the layout.

An elevator or staircase can automatically link to the equivalent elements on other floors of the same building.

Once elements and corridors are placed, your tenants see a route to their unit from their portal (Map button) or the arrival instructions email.

What happens automatically

A unit's status on the map is calculated from the units list data and active bookings.

A unit not placed on the map still exists in Stortech: it shows in the Units list but not on the plan.

Changing a unit's position on the plan does not change its number, type, or status.

Changes to the plan are not synced to the storefront in real time: the storefront shows availability by unit type, not physical position.

The route shown to a tenant only appears once wayfinding elements have been placed on the relevant floor; without them, the portal's Map button stays unavailable for that booking.

Common issues

A unit exists in the list but doesn't show on the plan.

Check: it hasn't been placed on the map yet.

Do: switch to Editor mode and drag-and-drop the unit onto the plan.

A unit is positioned incorrectly.

Check: are you on the right floor?

Do: switch to Editor mode and move the unit.

The color doesn't match the expected status.

Check: the unit's status in the Units list and its booking state.

Do: if inconsistent, reload the page. If the problem persists, contact support.

The editor isn't saving my changes.

Check: do you have the Owner or Manager role?

Do: if your role doesn't allow edits, ask an Owner.

The plan loads very slowly.

Check: a facility with many units can be slow to render.

Do: adjust the zoom. If it keeps happening, report it to support.

No floor selector is visible.

Check: the facility only has one floor configured.

Do: add a floor in Editor mode if needed.

The tenant doesn't see a map/route in their portal.

Check: have wayfinding elements been placed on the floor their unit is on?

Do: switch to Editor mode and place at least an entrance and a corridor leading to the unit.

Common questions

How do I see the status of all my units at a glance? — Open the Map section from the menu. The plan shows all placed units, color-coded by status. Occupied, available, and in-maintenance units are visually distinct.

A unit exists in the Units list but doesn't show on the plan. Why? — It hasn't been placed on the map yet. Switch to Editor mode and drag-and-drop the unit onto the plan from the list of unplaced units.

How do I move a unit on the plan? — In Editor mode, click the unit and drag it to its new position. You can also rotate it using the controls that appear on hover.

How do I add a second floor to my map? — In Editor mode, use the floor selector to add a new floor and place units on it.

How do I quickly find unit 308 on the plan? — Use the Search a unit... field in the map header. Non-matching units fade out and the found unit stays highlighted on the plan.

If I move a unit on the plan, does that change its number or status? — No. The map only reflects visual position. The unit's number, type, and status are managed from the Units list.

How do my tenants see the route to their unit? — Once wayfinding elements are placed (see above), the Map button in the customer portal (or the arrival instructions email link) shows the tenant a route from the entrance to their unit.

Why does the plan load slowly? — A facility with many units can be slow to render. Adjust the zoom or report it to support if it keeps happening.
