Turn on SMS notifications

Turn on text-message (SMS) notifications alongside email: sign up from your dashboard, accept the fees, and complete the carrier registration before the first send.

Written by Etienne Champagne

Stortech can send your automatic notifications by text message (SMS), in addition to email. Activation is a short sign-up from your dashboard: you accept the fees, describe your business, and Stortech handles the mandatory registration with the North American texting network before sending becomes possible.

Who this article is for

Activation requires the Owner or Manager role.

Before you start

Prepare your business's legal information: legal name, display name (the name your customers see at the start of each text), business number, entity type, country, full address, support email, website and business phone. Most of these fields are pre-filled from your facility's information; check them before you submit.

Activating and registering

Step 1.
From the main menu, click Settings, then, in the navigation column, under the Communication group, click SMS.

Step 2.
If SMS isn't turned on yet, the page presents the fees ($40 USD sign-up, $15 USD/month, $0.05 USD per message) with an Activate button. Click it to accept these fees on your Stortech subscription.

Step 3.
Fill out the three-step form: Business (legal name, display name, business number, entity type, country), Contact (address, city, state or province, postal code, support email, website, business phone), then Review to check what you entered. Required fields are marked with an asterisk, and Continue stays disabled while any of them is empty.

Step 4.
Click Submit registration. The page then shows your registration's status.

Once approved, the page shows the active state below: an Approved badge, your sender phone number, and SMS sending marked Enabled.

SMS Notifications approved, sending enabled

What happens automatically

Once your registration is approved, sending SMS becomes available for your facility; you then choose which notifications use it (see the related article below).

Monthly and usage fees are added to your next Stortech subscription invoice.

If your subscription payment fails, SMS sending may be suspended. Contact support to restore the service.

Statuses and key fields

Status

Meaning

Not activated

The SMS option hasn't been turned on for your facility yet.

Submitted

Your registration has been sent and is awaiting review.

Approved

The registration is accepted; SMS sending is available.

Rejected

Registration refused; the reason is shown on the page for correction.

Good to know

The $40 sign-up fee is only charged once, even if you come back to the page afterward.

Every text sent to a customer automatically includes an opt-out notice (STOP), as required by regulation.

SMS is available for US and Canadian phone numbers.

As soon as your registration is submitted (Submitted status or further, even before approval), an optional checkbox appears on your storefront's booking page, just below the mandatory terms checkbox: "Yes, text me about my account (payment reminders, balances, access codes)." It's unchecked by default and never blocks the booking. It doesn't change what the customer actually receives: an active customer already gets your transactional alerts. It exists as the explicit-consent evidence the texting networks require.

A customer who ticks that box, or who texts START to your number, automatically receives an opt-in confirmation text, which the texting networks also require. See SMS opt-in confirmation text.

Common questions

How much does it cost? $40 USD one-time sign-up fee, then $15 USD per month, plus $0.05 USD per text message sent.

Does SMS replace email? No. Email is always sent and can't be disabled; SMS is added on top for the notifications you choose. See Transactional email templates and the article on choosing SMS notifications.

How are the fees billed? Directly on your existing Stortech subscription. No new card to enter.

I was never asked to pick an industry. Is that normal? Yes. Every registration is submitted under "Real estate / self-storage". It shows on the Review step, on the "Type / industry" line.

How long does approval take? It varies; the page shows a Submitted status, then Approved once the registration is accepted.

My application was rejected. What do I do? The page shows the rejection reason. Fix the information in question and submit again.

Do my customers have to check a box to receive SMS? No. The box on the booking page is optional and exists only as explicit-consent evidence for the texting network. An active customer already receives the transactional SMS you've turned on, whether or not they check it, unless they've already replied STOP. That box also doesn't grant you the right to send them promotional messages.
